Red Reef – A Celebration of the Colourful Coral Trout
Among the many colourful characters of the Great Barrier Reef, the coral trout is hard to miss. With its vibrant red, orange and pink tones, often highlighted by bright blue spots, it brings a wonderful splash of colour to the reef.
Despite its name, the coral trout isn't actually a trout. It belongs to the grouper family and is a familiar resident of tropical coral reefs, where it can often be seen resting near coral outcrops or sheltering beneath ledges.
Coral trout are skilled hunters. They may remain almost motionless, watching for an opportunity to ambush passing fish, or slowly approach their prey before making a sudden dash. Their colours can also vary, and some species are able to change their appearance depending on their surroundings and activity.
One of the more fascinating features of coral trout is their life cycle. They begin life as females, with some changing into males as they mature. It's another reminder of just how remarkable life beneath the ocean's surface can be.
The Inspiration Behind Red Reef
Red Reef was inspired by a brightly coloured coral trout photographed by Benni on the Great Barrier Reef. Its rich reef colours and striking details provided the starting point for a design that celebrates the energy and beauty of tropical marine life.
With its vibrant colours and playful pops of blue, Red Reef is a design that makes a statement. Whether worn during the day or styled for an evening out, it's a lovely way to bring a little colour into your wardrobe.
At Benni Marine Designs, every design begins with Benni's own underwater photography. Each image offers a different glimpse into the marine world, transformed into original fabric designs and unique pieces to enjoy.
