About the Marine Life - Mandarin fish

The Colourful Little Mandarin Fish

If ever there was a fish that looked as though it had been painted by an artist, the Mandarin fish (Synchiropus splendidus) would surely be a contender.

With its extraordinary combination of electric blue, bright orange, green and yellow markings, this tiny tropical reef dweller is one of the ocean's most colourful characters.

Small in size but certainly not short on personality, the Mandarin fish inspired our Tropical Delight design at Benni Marine Designs.

A little fish with extraordinary colours

The Mandarin fish is a small member of the dragonet family, usually growing to around 6–7 centimetres in length.

Unlike most fish, Mandarin fish don't have scales. Instead, their bodies are covered in a thick protective mucus coating, which helps deter predators and protect them from parasites.

Their intricate markings are quite remarkable. Swirls of brilliant blue, orange and green create an almost psychedelic pattern, making each fish look like a tiny work of art.

They are found in warm tropical waters throughout the Indo-Pacific, including Australia, the Philippines and Indonesia, where they live amongst coral reefs and sheltered lagoons.

A romantic meeting at sunset

Perhaps one of the most fascinating things about the Mandarin fish is its evening courtship ritual.

During the day, these little fish spend much of their time close to the reef, moving between coral branches and hiding in small crevices.

But as the light begins to fade, something rather special happens.

Around sunset, males and females come together on the reef to find a mate. The male displays his beautiful fins and courts the female before the pair rise together into the water.

In a graceful swimming dance, they ascend above the reef and release their eggs and sperm into the water before drifting back down.

It's a brief but beautiful display, and one of the most magical sights for an underwater photographer lucky enough to witness it.

A little personality beneath the surface

Mandarin fish are slow-moving and rather shy. They spend much of their time searching the reef for tiny crustaceans and other small creatures to eat.

Their unusual body shape, vibrant colours and delicate movements make them fascinating to watch.

Despite their bright appearance, they can be surprisingly difficult to spot amongst the colourful coral and reef rubble. Finding one is always a lovely little discovery.
