Appearance

  • Juveniles: Dragon Wrasse juveniles are known for their distinct coloration and patterns. They have a brown or greenish body with long, flowing fins that resemble seaweed, helping them blend into their environment. This camouflage is a defense mechanism against predators.
  • Adults: As they mature, Dragon Wrasses undergo a significant color transformation. Adults have a more robust body with green, brown, or blue hues, and their fins become shorter. They also develop a noticeable "horn" above each eye, giving them a dragon-like appearance, hence the name.

Behavior

  • Dragon Wrasses are known for their curious and active nature. They are often seen flipping over rocks and debris in search of food, such as small invertebrates and crustaceans.
  • Juveniles mimic drifting algae to avoid predators, while adults are bolder and more aggressive, often defending their territory.

Habitat

  • They are typically found in coral reefs and rocky areas, where they can easily find shelter and food. They inhabit depths ranging from shallow waters to around 30 meters (100 feet).
