What is a Harlequin Shrimp?
The harlequin shrimp (Hymenocera picta) is a small, brightly colored marine crustacean known for its striking appearance and unique feeding habits. It is commonly found in coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific region, including areas around Hawaii, Australia, and the Philippines.
Key Features
- Appearance: Harlequin shrimp have a distinct, vibrant pattern with large, rounded spots of pink, purple, blue, and white on their bodies. They have large, flat claws that they often hold out in front of them, which also feature intricate patterns.
- Size: They are relatively small, growing to about 2 inches (5 cm) in length.
